St. Mary's has a strong tradition in athletics. Boys from 3rd to 6th classes have the opportunity to train and compete in athletics competitions such as Cross-Country, Santry and in recent years, Marathonkids. The focus is on building up fitness levels, learning new skills (cross country running, relay, sprints, long distance running, hurdles, long jump and shot put) and most importantly, enjoying taking part.
Cross Country involves three local park events and an overall final. This event promotes participation as boys build up their fitness to take part in long distance running throughout the year. It also promotes teamwork as runners are scored as part of a school team, earning points for their school at the local events before the big final day in May.
The Santry track and field events are held over two days in May. Boys train all year to take part in sprints, relay, hurdles, long distance and shot put. This is an exciting event that the boys enjoy every year as they get to experience running in Morton Stadium.
