Thursday Letter 2.02.23

03-February-23

Dear Parents,

Readalong fundraiser

Our ‘Readalong’ fundraiser will start on Tuesday 7th February. It will be a whole school project and it will last for four weeks, finishing on Friday 3rd March. This will coincide with World Book Day, which takes place on Thursday 2nd March. The children are encouraged to read as many books as they can in this space of time. It is hoped that the Readalong will improve literacy in our school, as well as raising valuable funds. Get in touch with your son’s teacher if they did not receive their sponsorship card. Many thanks to Ms. Donnelly, Ms. Russell and Ms. Brennan for all their help organising this initiative.

Comprehension Strategy, Writing Genre and PE Strand

We are taking a whole school approach to writing genres and comprehension strategies. This month we will focus on ‘Report’ and ‘Recount’ as our writing genre. ‘Determining Importance’ will be our comprehension strategy. Ms. Quinn’s fourth class will display some of their impressive samples of ‘Recount’ writing in our hall this week. Our new PE strand for boys this month will be ‘games’. We look forward to seeing Mr. O’Brien’s class work at the end of February.

ACCORD Relationship Talk for fifth and sixth class

ACCORD will give an online information talk about their programme for Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) to parents of fifth and sixth class boys on Wednesday 22nd March. The boys will need consent from parents before they attend the presentation in school on Wednesday 29th March.

Senior Hurlers

Well done to our senior hurlers who played their first challenge match of the year yesterday in St. Catherine’s Park. The boys had a good win over Ballyroan. Many thanks to Mr. Clandillon and Mr. Keegan for organising this game.

Table Tennis League

Our table tennis teams have a busy schedule this week with three of the four teams in action. Team C (Ryan McElhinney, Alex McMahon, Eoin Gleeson and Ben Kelly) and Team D (Samuel Wright, Alex Mitchell, Jayden Singh and Mason McEvoy) host Ballyroan today in the PE Hall whilst Team A (James Dillon, Johnny Donovan, Mamadu Bah and Daragh Kelly) travelled to Griffeen Valley ET this morning for a league game. Team D also play a cup fixture tomorrow against Blackrock College.

Bank Holiday Monday on 6th February and Mid-term Break from 13th to 18th February

Our school will be closed on Monday 6th February for the new Bank Holiday. School will also be closed from the 13th to 18th February for our midterm break.

Le dea-ghuí,

Dara Burke, Principal.
