Thursday Letter 10.11.22

01-December-22

Dear Parents,

Comprehension Strategy, Writing Genre and PE Strand

We are taking a whole school approach to writing genres, comprehension strategies and our PE strand. This month we will focus on ‘Explanation’ and ‘Persuasive’ as our writing genres. ‘Making Connections’ will be our comprehension strategy. Ms. Murray’s fifth class displayed some of their samples of ‘Procedure’ in our hall. The boys wrote about their experiments during Maths Week and the content is very informative and well-presented, with neat handwriting. We look forward to seeing a display from Mr. Dineen’s sixth class at the end of the month. We will focus on the strand of Gymnastics in PE.

Bob-a-Job

Thanks to all the boys who completed their chores at home for our Bob-a-Job. We are grateful to all parents who donated money. The current figure raised is €4,498. There is still time to make a donation.

St Mary’s S-COOL NEWS

We are excited to say that the inaugural ‘St Mary’s S-COOL News’ is being launched tomorrow through our website! It’s a video-based news-round that covers all the recent events in St Mary’s over Sept and Oct. The entire school will watch the first edition tomorrow at 12.15pm.

There’s loads of features in tomorrow’s episode including: The Oasis Class, Bob-a-Job, Monster Mash, Maths Week, Gaelic Football… as well as the first of our Class Close-ups on Ms Friel’s Junior Infants and Ms Donovan’s Third Class.

Sixth Class students, Sean Grant and Luke Schuster, are the news anchor-boys for this episode and they’ve done an amazing job leading this new initiative, which is entirely kid-based!

The Christmas edition is already in the planning stage, with bi-monthly editions planned. Many thanks to Mr. Clandillon, Mr. Dineen and Ms. Hennessy for organising this initiative. Please check out this new feature when it is uploaded to our school website tomorrow.

Primary School of the year for Hurling Development – ‘Friends of Dublin Hurling’

St Mary’s BNS is both grateful and delighted to have been named as Primary School of the Year for Hurling Development at the recent Friends of Dublin Hurling Presentation and Awards night in the Bonnington Hotel on Friday 4th November.

The prestigious award recognises the efforts made by the entire school community over a number of years; the hurlers themselves, their supportive families, the local clubs, as well as the management and staff of the school who continue to provide opportunities to young hurlers throughout the school.

The award follows a Herald Cup winning season but more importantly recognises the sheer number of pupils engaged in hurling throughout the entire year.

Mr Walsh and Mr Clandillon were on hand to receive the award and were presented with a fantastic new set of school jerseys as a prize!

PA Christmas fundraiser – School Disco

Our PA have decided to organise a school disco as part of their annual Christmas fundraiser. Dates and times for this event are yet to be confirmed.

Sensory Room Upgrade

Our sensory room was upgraded over the midterm. Thanks to Corinne Bagnall for all her efforts and we are very grateful to our PA who funded some of the new resources for this space.

School Cleaner

We are still looking for a school cleaner. If anyone is interested or if you know anyone who would be interested then please contact the school office.

Donnacha Bolger

Well done to Donnacha Bolger (Ms. Clarke’s third class) who took part in the Open World Dancing Championship in the iconic Blackpool Tower recently. Donnacha and his dance partner, Lacey, came third place in the cha-cha and rumba.
