Thursday Letter 28-02-19

Dear Parents,

Outdoor Board Games

We have four new outdoor board games for the school yard. Thanks to our caretaker, Christy Byrne, for putting them up over the midterm. We have a Motor Racing Game in the Junior Yard (daily rota), a Snakes and Ladders in the Middle Yard (weekly rota) and Chess and Hoops on the Senior Yard (weekly rota). If they prove to be popular, don’t cause any trouble and if we don’t lose any pieces then we may order more. These games were purchased after consulting with the student council who would like more activities on the school yard. The Junior Yard Rota will be the same daily rota that Ms. Killane organised two weeks ago for outdoor games. Many thanks to the Parents’ Association for funding the board games.

First Confession – Monday 4th March in St. Mary’s Church at 7.30pm

Best of luck to Ms. Dempsey’s 2nd class and Ms. Walsh’s 2nd class who will celebrate their First Confession on Monday 4th March in St. Mary’s Church at 7.30pm. The boys have been practising their prayers and their songs for this important Sacrament.

Engineer’s Week

Every class in the school will mark Engineer’s Week on Monday and Tuesday. Many thanks to Regina Briscoe (mother of Dylan in 5th class) who has organised this event. We are also very grateful to Seadhna Hannon (father of Nathan in 1st class), Rory Mullan (father of Senan in Junior Infants), Denis Kelly (father of Robbie in Senior Infants and Daragh in 2nd class) and Mike Reed (father of Josh in 2nd class and Ethan in 4th class).

World Book Day – 7th March

World Book Day will take place on Thursday 7th March. The boys are welcome to dress up as a character from their favourite book.

Internet Safety at Home

As always, we are keen to emphasise the importance of online safety. Please monitor the online content that your son accesses at home. We can control the level of internet access at school. Reassurance: Speak to your children about online dangers and create awareness of the importance to chat about any worries or unusual behaviour that may be happening online. Online Stranger Danger: Ensure that your children only contact people online that they know in the real world. Age Appropriateness: Ensure all internet connected devices are restricted to age suitable content. Please check for more guidance.

‘Readalong’ – 4th February to 8th March

Ms. Keane’s 4th class have teamed up with Ms. Killane’s 1st class for paired reading as part of the Readalong fundraiser. They took advantage of the lovely sunshine and enjoyed this activity outside. Ms. Corry’s Junior Infants will read their new library books to Ms. O’Malley’s 6th class boys on Friday. All classes are really enjoying the extra opportunities that Readalong is offering. Don’t forget to keep filling in the sponsor cards. Please check out the photos on our school Facebook page. Thanks to Ms. Donnelly and Ms. Russell for organising this event.

Accord Information Night for Parents of 5th and 6th class boys – Tuesday 2nd April at 7.30pm in School Hall

Accord will give a Relationships and Sexuality talk to 5th class boys on Tuesday 9th April and 6th class boys on Wednesday 7th April. There will be an information night for parents of 5th and 6th class boys on Tuesday 2nd April in the school hall at 7.30pm.

Mr. Lynch’s 5th class are currently displaying their writing genre in our school hall and this was admired by the whole school at a recent assembly. Ms. Teehan’s 6th class performed ‘Shotgun’ as Gaeilge with Senan Walsh from Ms. Hunston’s 3rd class accompanying them on piano. Our athletics teams and quiz teams took centre stage after their recent success. Mark Deighnan showed a unique talent as he completed three rubix cubes in two minutes. Ollie McCormack and Eoin Gleeson from Ms. Dempsey’s 2nd class took a bow for their recent efforts in completing a duathlon. Aaron Doyle (Ms. Teehan’s 6th class) and Jayden Parsons (Ms. Hunston’s 3rd class) also got a mention for their recent acting achievements.

Traditional Musicians

Our next school assembly will be conducted in Irish to mark Seachtain na Gaeilge. Please let me know if we have any boys in the school who play a traditional Irish instrument.

School Quiz teams

Best of luck to our school quiz teams who take part in the next stage of the Credit Union quiz in Kilnamanagh this Sunday. Mr. Clandillon will inform parents of the time and venue.

Omar Alkrdi and Cillian McCarthy – Ms Keane’s 4th class

Omar Alkrdi recently took part in a violin competition in Newpark College in Blackrock. Omar played ‘Meditation’ by Jules Massenet. Cillian McCarthy competed in a Lyrical dance competition in Donegal. Cillian is a member of the Westside Dance and Drama Group.

Le dea-ghuí,

Dara Burke, Principal.
